Superintendent: Dr. Lewis Brooks
The award-winning Medical Detectives program at Helena Middle School provided an engaging, hands-on learning experience in which students acted as real-life medical investigators. The program emphasized experimental design, critical thinking, and problem-solving as students explored the human body and worked to diagnose diseases. Students collected and analyzed medical data, measured and interpreted vital signs, and investigated infectious diseases. Through structured lessons, they examined how healthcare professionals identified, treated, and prevented illness. Laboratory activities allowed students to test the effectiveness of antibiotics and draw evidence-based conclusions about patient conditions. The program also introduced the human body as an interconnected system, with particular focus on the nervous system. Students constructed neuron models and conducted a sheep brain dissection, which deepened their understanding of how the brain processed information and controlled bodily responses. They applied this knowledge to analyze symptoms and determine causes of dysfunction. In the final phase of the program, students investigated a simulated community health crisis involving a mysterious toxin. They evaluated patient histories, analyzed lab results, and used mapping tools to trace the source of the outbreak. The experience concluded with presentations that proposed solutions to protect public health. Overall, the program fostered scientific inquiry, collaboration, and real-world application of medical concepts.
