Russell County Schools
Principal: Ms. Lisa Rushing
Superintendent: Dr. Brenda Coley
Mount Olive Primary School implemented the “Book Fairy Challenge: Inspiring Accuracy, Stamina, and Love of Books” program to promote a strong culture of reading among Pre-K through second grade students. The program was designed to increase student motivation, strengthen comprehension, and build positive reading habits aligned to foundational literacy skills. Throughout the school year, students participated in the Accelerated Reader program and were recognized for both reading volume and comprehension accuracy. Clear expectations were established to ensure that recognition reflected meaningful understanding, with developmentally appropriate accuracy goals for early learners. Students who met these criteria were celebrated as “Book Fairies,” and their names were displayed on Ollie’s Roaring Reading Wall to honor their achievement. The program emphasized consistency, encouragement, and visibility. Classrooms incorporated dedicated reading time, goal setting, and progress monitoring to support student success. Teachers reinforced the importance of comprehension through guided reading, discussions, and targeted support for students needing additional intervention. The impact of the program was evident in increased student engagement and measurable growth in reading performance. Students demonstrated improved confidence, stamina, and enthusiasm for reading. The initiative also fostered a sense of pride and community, as students were motivated by both individual recognition and collective celebration. Mount Olive Primary School’s “Book Fairy” program successfully created a joyful and purposeful reading culture, supporting early literacy development and contributing to overall academic growth.
