Reroute at James Clemens High School is an academic intervention program that occurs during the hour-long lunch period every day. Students are identified for Reroute by examining numerous data such as current grades, past grades, and assessment scores. Reroute students can make up assignments, complete missed tests, and the biggest piece is tutoring which is offered by teachers and contracted staff. Students have stated that receiving tutoring from other adults aside from their math teacher has been beneficial. Truancy has unintentionally improved as well. Decreasing chronic absenteeism was not an original goal with the program, but there is a clear correlation due to the relationships built within Reroute. Each Reroute student has numerous adults that interact and support that student daily. Addressing mental health has recently been added as a component to Reroute because the administration noticed the students who struggle academically also have challenges outside of the classroom. Therefore, James Clemens implemented one-on-one counseling and group counseling with a certified mental health coach. The mental health coach works with Reroute students on areas such as social challenges, coping strategies, and organizational skills. Not only has James Clemens seen failure rates cut in half, but mental health referrals have decreased as well. Reroute is addressing student needs and filling gaps both academically and socially.
