Among the many initiatives led by Harlan Elementary School’s Peer Helpers, the Petals of Love project stood out as a deeply meaningful and transformative experience for students. Created to bring warmth and compassion to the residents of the Mitchell Hollingsworth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the project made a lasting impression on everyone involved. During the Great Kindness Challenge in 2023, students donated funds in exchange for having their names written on pink paper roses. These donations allowed the school to purchase real roses, each representing love and kindness. Art students also created personalized Encouragement Cards, ensuring that each of the 200 residents received both a rose and a heartfelt message. In March, Peer Helpers, joined by their parents and coordinators, personally delivered the gifts, creating a touching and joyful event. The residents were moved by the thoughtful gestures, and students witnessed firsthand the powerful effect of kindness. More than a service project, Petals of Love served as a service-learning opportunity, helping students build character, empathy, and the essential life skills of communication and collaboration. The program emphasized making healthy choices and giving back to the community, teaching students that small acts of kindness can leave a significant impact. The program’s success extended beyond the school, inspiring others and showcasing the power of community. Harlan students became ambassadors of compassion. The Petals of Love project proved that through service, students not only uplift others but also grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens ready to lead with heart.
