PUSH Leadership
Sheffield City Schools
Principal: Dr. Jill Johnson
Superintendent: Dr. Carlos Nelson

The PUSH Leadership Program was created to meet a critical need: supporting 5th- and 6th-grade girls during one of the most formative stages of their development. At this age, self-identity is emerging, confidence can decline, and social pressures intensify. Without intentional support, these challenges can impact academic performance, decision-making, and long-term success. PUSH addressed this need through a structured, 32-week leadership and mentorship experience designed to build confidence, resilience, and leadership capacity. Participants engaged in weekly mentoring sessions, leadership workshops, experiential learning opportunities, and personalized goal setting. A defining feature of the program was its strong network of support, connecting students with peer mentors, adult role models, and community leaders who provided consistent encouragement and guidance. The program goes beyond teaching leadership concepts by giving girls authentic opportunities to lead. Participants designed and implemented school initiatives and completed capstone projects that positively impacted their communities, allowing them to apply skills in meaningful ways. The program’s effectiveness was evident as discipline referrals decreased by 76%, absenteeism dropped by 18%, and over 90% of participants reported increased confidence and improved decision-making. By investing in young girls during these pivotal years, PUSH Leadership is building a generation of confident, capable leaders prepared to make a lasting impact.
