The Glencoe Tribes initiative began with a simple yet powerful goal: to inspire and motivate students to achieve academic excellence. The Glencoe Middle School leadership team came together last year and divided students into four tribes – East, Rock City, Vulcan, and Zuber – each named after historic rock quarries in the community. These tribes fostered a sense of belonging, teamwork, and friendly competition, as students earned points for academic growth, achieving SMART goals, daily attendance, positive behavior, acts of service, and participation in the school’s Tribal Games. East and Rock City Tribes were made up of fifth and sixth graders who competed against one another for points, while Vulcan and Zuber Tribes were made up of seventh and eighth graders who competed for points. Announcements were made daily to keep everyone abreast of point values along the way, culminating in the top two tribes receiving a party in celebration of their efforts. The results spoke for themselves as Glencoe Middle School saw a remarkable improvement in student engagement and students experienced a significant performance increase on the ACAP. This program successfully combined academic achievement with healthy competition to create a school culture where everyone thrived as they reached for a common goal.
