Springville High School’s (SHS) Tiger Code was a student-centered character education initiative that fostered a positive school culture. Originally introduced to unify students and staff during a leadership transition, the code emphasized truth, integrity, generosity, encouragement, and respect. Over time, it became deeply embedded in SHS, embraced by students, faculty, and the community. To promote the Tiger Code, its messages were displayed throughout the school, in local businesses, on social media, and on school merchandise. Initiatives like the Tiger Code Student of the Month and awards such as the Tiger Code belt and Positive Turn Around chain encouraged students to embody its values. Writing prompts and merchandise incentives further reinforced adherence, making the code an intrinsic part of student behavior. The impact extended beyond the school, as students demonstrated generosity and respect through community service, including record-breaking food drives. Student-led organizations and events further exemplified the code’s influence. Its success attracted attention from educators statewide, with student-led tours showcasing its effectiveness. In 2023, Character.org recognized the Tiger Code as a Promising Practice. The initiative contributed to academic improvements, including a 3-point increase in the state school report card score and a 22% rise in Advanced Placement success. Tiger Code also reduced absenteeism and discipline issues while enhancing school spirit.
