Saraland Middle School’s Outreach and Inclusion Program, a partnership with the Cleveland House in Saraland, provided students with a powerful opportunity to engage in meaningful community service while developing empathy and leadership skills. The collaboration supported weekly gatherings of adults with special needs who visited the Cleveland House for socialization, activities, and refreshments. Many of these adults lacked opportunities for work or independent living, making these gatherings a critical source of connection and joy. Students participated monthly by organizing activities, bringing supplies, and leading hands-on projects. These experiences encouraged relationship-building across generations and abilities, allowing students to develop compassion, active listening, and collaboration skills in an authentic setting. By engaging directly with individuals who have unique needs, students gained a deeper understanding of inclusivity and the importance of human connection. This program enriched the lives of all involved. Students discovered the impact of service, often noting how much joy and fulfillment they felt from making others smile. The experience extended beyond volunteering – it became a transformative journey that shaped students’ character and broadened their perspectives. This initiative demonstrated the Saraland Middle School’s commitment to cultivating a caring and inclusive environment.
