Chickasaw City Schools was given the unique opportunity to partner with the Mobile Area Education Foundation to pursue a Full-Service Community School grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Chickasaw Elementary School (CES) is one of three schools in Alabama and the only elementary school receiving this community school grant. One central pillar of implementing this program is increasing community engagement and supporting families. The grant allows the school to employ a Full Service Community Grant Coordinator who collaborates with administration, faculty, staff, and parents to offer community engagement activities with a family-friendly focus. Parent and community member involvement has significantly increased compared to the years before the 2023-2024 school year. The grant team, along with help from faculty and staff, has provided resources for CES families, such as medical and dental treatment for students. Parents and families have utilized free monthly laundry services through a community partnership. The full-service community grant coordinator started a Tribe Council. The Tribe Council is a group of parents who meet regularly to discuss happenings in and around the school. When the group first started, four employees were in attendance, and only one was a parent. Through outreach efforts, the Tribe Council grew to have over 50 parents attending regularly. These parents now volunteer for activities and events throughout the school year.
