The Future Teachers of Alabama (FTA) program at Elmore County High School seeks to fulfill the organization’s mission to “Grow Our Own” by encouraging students to explore teaching as a career. The 2024-2025 school year was packed with activities designed to foster an interest in education and develop future educators. From recruiting new members through the school’s Get Involved Fair to maintaining Supply Centers with free hygiene products and school supplies for all students, FTA sought to involve and serve as many students on campus as possible. With a membership of over fifty, more than one out of every ten students were part of ECHS’s FTA. During the year, members read to local preschool students, coded with Kindergarteners, participated in the elementary school’s Read Across America program, shadowed community teachers on Groundhog Day, visited Faulkner University’s College of Education and much more. To collaborate with others throughout the state and learn more about the field of education, students attended the state FTA Conference in Tuscaloosa. For the third year in a row, an ECHS student was elected to the FTA State Executive Board. To close the year, FTA held its annual Future Educator Signing Day to celebrate graduating seniors who committed to pursuing a degree in education. Furthermore, two club members received the Elmore County Community Foundation’s Ramona P. Jordan Memorial Scholarship for future educators.
