Superintendent: Dr. Mark Sullivan
Booker T. Washington K-8 School’s STEM Fridays was created to connect students to careers and opportunities in STEM. The school partnered with over 15 community stakeholders to expose students to science, technology, engineering, and math experiences. Students were able to choose the club they wanted to participate in throughout the year. The clubs met on Fridays for one hour to do experiments, projects, competitions, and research. Students chose from Nutrition Club, UAB Nurses Club, Aviation Club, Math Club, Modeling Club, Sewing Club, Girls Scouts, Chess Club, Money Club, Firefighters Club, Dance Club, Spanish Club, Coding Club, and Gaming Club. Students not only had fun but learned practical lessons to empower their future. STEM Fridays were a weekly highlight for Booker T. Washington K-8. All 300 middle school students and most of the elementary students were able to participate. One club that really opened opportunities for students was the UAB Nurses Club. This club helped students earn their Babysitting License, learn first aide, assisted students with summer employment, and provided a hospital visit to learn more about nursing careers. STEM Fridays were a unique way to involve stakeholders and engage students with their community and future.
