Prattville Intermediate School (PIS) implemented a positive behavior program based on Ron Clark’s HOUSE System. The purpose of this student-led program was to foster a school-wide community of leaders. The program’s success relied solely on students’ ability to make sound choices. Furthermore, the HOUSE program helped reinforce excellence and personal accountability while providing students with opportunities to grow and build character. PIS adopted the motto, “FOUR Houses, one family,” which symbolized the expectations for students to respect, understand, and care for one another. Every student was placed into one of four HOUSES (Altruismo, Amistad, Isibindi, and Reveur). Throughout the year, students met with their respective HOUSE to learn character traits that promoted leadership. Students earned points for their HOUSE based on positive actions. Each HOUSE worked toward having the most points and being named HOUSE champion at the end of the year. While Prattville Intermediate School continued to prioritize academic excellence, implementation of the HOUSE program afforded an opportunity to emphasize well roundedness to students and parents. An important aspect of the HOUSE program was it was never punitive. Students could not lose points once earned. The HOUSE system gave every student a space to belong, empowered each of them to make good choices, and celebrated work toward a common goal and public service.
