Located in an urban area of Mobile County, Chickasaw Middle/High School students changed lives each day in the Life Changers manufacturing program by creating a container classroom and prosthetic limbs for individuals in developing countries. Last year, students created twenty-five prosthetic limbs, traveled to Latin America, and fitted amputees in need. Over 9% of the student population at Chickasaw Middle/High School participated in the Life Changers program and volunteered 1,692 hours of their time to produce prosthetic limbs. The second prong of the Life Changers manufacturing program was the shipping container project. Last year, students spent class time throughout the school year gutting a shipping container and remodeling it with components to create a solar-powered classroom for a community that did not have access to the Internet or other important resources for education. Students then visited Brus Laguna, Honduras, and met with Mayor Tonella, where the container classroom was most needed. Through the Life Changers manufacturing program at Chickasaw Middle/High School, students dedicated their time and efforts to creating a better world for those in need and were 2022 recipients of the President's Volunteer Service Award. The program was a 2022 semi-finalist for the YASS STOP Grant and was awarded $200,000.00 for being Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding, and Permissionless Education. The program also received $50,000 from Harbor Freight Tools for Schools.
