WETUMPKA, ALA. – DECEMBER 10, 2020: Harland Drew Glass, assistant principal at Wetumpka High School in the Elmore County School System has been named the Alabama Assistant Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP).  As the Alabama state winner, Glass is eligible to be selected as the 2021 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) National Assistant Principal of the Year.

Glass has 15 years of experience in the field of education with 5 years experience as an assistant principal. He has served in several roles throughout the Elmore County School System including special education teacher and an instructional assistant before becoming the assistant principal at Wetumpka High School.

Glass has worked to build positive relationships with the Wetumpka High School faculty and staff. He is known for having a positive outlook and the ability to identify the good in every situation. As a leader, Glass regularly lends a helping hand where needed.

As the coordinator of the Advanced Placement, the program has seen growth each year in both percent of exams and percent of students with qualifying scores. In 2016, the percent of students was 21.7 and has grown to 53.4 in 2020. The percent of exams has grown from 18 to 37 from 2016 to 2020.

Glass credits the success of the Advanced Placement program by being a motivational force for the teachers. “Motivation breeds improvement,” comments Glass. “Showing excitement and being involved provides motivation to the teachers to improve each year. By simply caring and listening, the program is moving forward and continues to grow in positive ways.

A panel of judges selected Glass from numerous applicants across the state of Alabama.  Mr. Glass’s award was announced during a faculty meeting on December 10.  Glass will represent the state as the nominee for the National Assistant Principal of the Year Award.  Glass will also serve a one-year term on the AASSP Board of Directors.

“Harland Glass is an exemplary assistant principal. His willingness to offer support and motivation to faculty and staff is a valuable quality in a leader,” says Dr. Vic Wilson, AASSP executive director.
