Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools - Elementary (TMS-E) developed MagicFest: An International Voyage as a collaborative event to foster an appreciation for cultural diversity and nurture students who are open-minded and appreciate the values and traditions of others. This event engaged families from all over the city and was presented by students, families, teachers, school leadership, and the TMS-E PTA. Student families hosted 14 culture-stations that featured their own cultural heritage, demonstrated cultural dance, handicrafts, and music, and presented historical events, geography, wildlife, and natural resources within their country-of-origin. Visitors experienced the cultural diversity of their schoolmates, learned about different cultures, enjoyed traditional foods with ingredients cultivated in featured countries, and “traveled” the world through hand-on activities. For TMS-E students, MagicFest made the world more accessible, encouraged global exploration, and served as a window to the world for students who have not had the opportunity to visit places outside the United States. This sustainable event celebrated the diversity of TMS-E, enhanced feelings of belonging, and broadened students’ understanding and appreciation of each other.
