Superintendent, Mr. Robbie Elliott

Sparkman School attributed a 25-point gain on the ALSDE Report Card to the GROW and THRIVE program. GROW was a daily, skill-specific literacy instruction, and THRIVE was the weekly, differentiated Math instruction. These programs were built around placing all students in small groups designed to meet their skill-specific needs in reading and math. Every student was placed into GROW and THRIVE groups based on formative assessments and other data points. Through these programs, Sparkman implemented an individualized approach to learning focused on each child's needs, continual growth goals, and confidence in learning. Sparkman’s laser focus on growth, called “flying northeast” produced one of the most impressive data results, the dramatic growth of students reaching projected goals in both mathematics and reading on SCANTRON assessments. The program also created the development of confident teachers and learners, innovative use of instructional time, and creative scheduling. As a result of GROW and THRIVE, Sparkman School was heralded the third most improved school in Alabama. Although the quantitative numbers showed the remarkable impact GROW and THRIVE had on student achievement, the pride and confidence the program brought the community of learners and leaders was immeasurable.
