The 3 B’s: Books, Boys, and Breakfast played an essential part in the reading success of boys at Sycamore Elementary School in the 2019-2020 school year. During the summer of 2019, the school leadership team met and developed a plan to increase reading proficiency among the male population. The leadership team decided that positive adult male role models were needed to showcase how reading could impact the lives of young boys. “The 3 B’s” initiative emerged from this meeting. Each month, the boys met in the lunchroom for breakfast, and a book was read to them by fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and community male members. The adult male readers engaged the boys in conversation and encouraged genuine interest in the book. The boys were extremely excited to return to their classrooms to reread the book and take an accelerated reader assessment, which also helped them meet their reading goals. The successes which evolved from the implementation of the program included an increased volume of library books checked out by males, more male students met their nine week Accelerated Reader Goals, and most importantly, the boys displayed an eagerness to continue the program in the upcoming school year. Because of “The 3 B’s”, the boys at Sycamore Elementary learned the importance of reading and the impact it can make on their lives.
